Individualism is an ideology. It has gone hyper and is causing great personal, social and environmental harm. If you are feeling this and want to fight back, The Miracle Inn is here for you.
In February 2025, I gave a TEDx talk in Aberystwyth. I posed the question 'Why is environmentalism failing?' I argued that a major reason - possibly the major reason - is the emergence of hyper-individualism.
Over 6,000 people have seen that TEDx, it seems to be resonating. I think I tapped into something people are intuiting about today’s environmentalism. They are recognising that it is just not sufficient. It needs to pivot.
This pivot is starting to happen. New cultural approaches to environmentalism are emerging. They chime with new approaches to inequality, racism, fascism, polarisation, societal fragmentation, and the multiple mental and physical health problems we are living with.
At their core, all these fresh efforts are nurturing new ways of thinking about who we are as human beings. They help people to think and live a little less like a ‘rugged’ independent self, and a little more like a connected interdependent self. They tackle hyper-individualism.
I left my job in December 2025; the time was right. I wanted to see if I could help these new cultural approaches take off, and to see if they can be networked into a wider movement that I think is emerging - 'The Movement for Interdependence'.
So here I am, and here is The Miracle Inn. But I can't be - and don't want to be - here alone; I ain’t no 'rugged individualist'. This is a job for an 'us' and a 'we'. Can we take environmentalism to the next level? Can we do it differently? I think we can, I think we have to. That is the purpose at the heart of this project.
My first goal is to officially launch The Miracle Inn in spring 2026. It will be a CIC and membership organisation for The Movement for Interdependence. Whether or not I achieve this first goal depends on how much interest there is in an initiative like this.
To make that judgement call - to test how viable this idea is - I am going to see how many people sign up to The Miracle Inn newsletter over the next two months. If, by April, 500 people have subscribed, I will hit launch.
So, if the above resonates, if you think environmentalism needs to pivot, and you want to spend some time - online and in real life - with others who feel the same, please sign up to The Miracle Inn newsletter. And please spread the word.
